CYRUS MEHRI SAYS NFLPA’S UPDATED CONSTITUTION JEOPARDIZES OPEN ELECTIONS, STIFLES PLAYER CHOICES

Mehri: “NFL Players Deserve Better”

WASHINGTON, D.C. (September 4) – Cyrus Mehri, who on August 22 announced his intention to run for Executive Director of the NFL Players Association on HBO’s Real Sports, released the following statement about the NFL Players Association Constitution:

“The stakes here are far bigger than my campaign – they are about player choice. The incumbent Executive Director has given the vast majority of NFL players and the public at large the false impression that there would be an election for Executive Director in March of 2018 consistent with the NFLPA’s long standing tradition of having an open election every three years during the off-season. However, during the heart of the 2016 season, without adequate explanation to player representatives or disclosure to the 2,100 NFL players who were busy trying to win games, the incumbent oversaw the passage of constitutional amendments designed to stifle player choices and competition for the Executive Director position.

“NFL players deserve better. They compete every day. They deserve an Executive Director willing to do the same. The current Executive Director locked thousands into a bad deal for 10 years with no right to opt out. No wonder he is afraid of competition. Players deserve choices.

“Today, for the first time, the NFLPA constitution will be made widely available at Cyrus4NFLPA.com, with the new heretofore hidden procedures available on pages 13-16.

“Labor Day, more than any other day, demands that we honor workers’ voices.  The incumbent’s action in spurring this secretive constitutional amendment does the opposite.  If Smith desires transparency from the League, he should first provide it to the players.”
