CYRUS MEHRI RELEASES LETTER CALLING FOR NFLPA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE TO ACT ON ITS FIDUCIARY DUTIES; SAYS NFLPA SHOULD HAVE DEMOCRATIC PRINCIPLES

Cyrus Mehri: “The players and all Player Representatives are entitled to be fully informed about the issues.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. (September 21) – Cyrus Mehri, who last month announced his intention to run for Executive Director of the NFLPA on HBO’s “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel,” released a letter to NFLPA President Eric Winston and the NFLPA Executive Committee following Tuesday’s vote by player leaders to rubber stamp DeMaurice Smith’s selection for the position without an election.  The NFLPA has traditionally elected its Executive Director every three years.

Mr. Mehri’s letter – which pointed out that the union should have democratic principles that allow for members to have a choice – called for Smith’s contract to be at will and not include guaranteed money. The letter states:

“The players and all Player Representatives are entitled to be fully informed about the issues, including opposing views, which will vitally affect their careers, livelihoods and families and then make a decision regarding the leadership of the Union….

Please be advised that I will continue my campaign to present my vision on how best to represent and protect the best interests of NFL players…. A number of NFL Hall of Famers have endorsed my campaign, because they know the players deserve better than what they have with the current leadership….

My efforts will not cease until there is a process providing for a democratic election of the Executive Director. The membership deserves no less. That said, I respectfully request that in your negotiations for Mr. Smith’s contract, you insist that the contract’s termination provisions provide the utmost flexibility to the NFLPA, i.e., it should be terminable at will and not include guaranteed money. Prudence, as well as your fiduciary duties, compels such flexibility in order to protect the interests of the players and the treasury of the NFLPA.”

Mehri intends to continue his campaign in order to protect the best interests of NFL players and hopes to compel an open election in March 2018. A number of NFL legends, including eight Hall of Famers – Jim Brown, Harry Carson, Joe Greene, Leroy Kelly, Bob Lilly, Mike Singletary, Paul Warfield and Kellen Winslow, Sr. – have expressed support for Mehri’s candidacy.
