CYRUS MEHRI CALLS FOR NFL PLAYERS TO HAVE OPEN DISCUSSION FOLLOWING ALLEGATIONS OF RACIAL PROFILING AGAINST MICHAEL BENNETT
Mehri: “One of the principle reasons I stepped forward as a candidate for Executive Director of the NFLPA to facilitate NFL Players having their voices heard as citizens of our great country.”
WASHINGTON, D.C. — (September 7) – Following Seattle Seahawks’ Michael Bennett’s accusations that the Las Vegas police department used excessive force on him last month, Cyrus Mehri released the following statement:
“The NFL, and the nation as a whole, has experienced another gut wrenching moment seeing the unfair and inappropriate treatment of Michael Bennett by Las Vegas police officers on August 27.
“Bennett has shown himself to be a thoughtful and outspoken person and a courageous leader. Our thoughts are with him and his family.
“This past year has revealed the importance of having a broad and open dialogue on issues of race and fairness as well as other issues of community and national concern. One of the principle reasons I stepped forward as a candidate for Executive Director of the NFLPA is to facilitate NFL Players having their voices heard as citizens of our great country.
“Inspired by Reverend Barber’s ‘Moral Mondays,’ my Vision Statement and Platform specifically calls for a ‘Talking Tuesdays’ program, under which, once a month, players with similar charitable and community-centered interests will have the chance to gather – online or in person – to discuss those interests and coordinate efforts.
“Our country needs forward-looking leadership and fulsome dialogue. We cannot afford for these issues to fester and for our national fabric to deteriorate. If given the opportunity to be Executive Director, I will assist NFL Players in using their unique positions in society to move the country forward.”
