CYRUS MEHRI ANNOUNCES PLAN TO

INCREASE TEAM ROSTER SIZE

Mehri: “It is in the interest of the game – for owners and players alike – to reverse the downward trend on player tenure and to enhance player safety”

WASHINGTON, D.C. (September 5) – Cyrus Mehri, who on August 22 announced his intention to run for Executive Director of the NFL Players Association on HBO’s Real Sports, released the following statement about increasing player tenure through roster size:

“The past weekend culminated one of the most tumultuous weeks on the NFL calendar, when hundreds of players were cut and dreams were dashed so that Clubs could arrive at their 53-man rosters. We congratulate all those who landed roster spots and we also applaud those who did not make the cut this time.

“Our campaign is seeking a series of reforms to benefit NFL players, including increasing roster size to 60.  This will advance player safety and player longevity, which has plummeted from roughly 5 years to roughly 3 years during my opponent’s tenure.  Market forces have pushed Clubs to release solid veterans in their prime to the detriment of the Clubs.  It is in the interest of the game – for owners and players alike – to reverse the downward trend on player tenure and to enhance player safety.  I have a multi-faceted plan to turn plummeting player tenure around, including a focus on a 60 man roster, which I will set in motion in March of 2018 if elected by the players to serve as Executive Director.”
